Chieng was born into an Malaysian Chinese family. He was born in Johor Bahru. From 1989 to 1994, he was living in Manchester in New Hampshire. Watters had mocked the people living there and conducted respectful interviews in Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese. The video became viral and received coverage in the Washington Post and Slate In his early years, Chieng was a Singapore Sea Scout. Even though he's lived in Australia for more than a decade Chieng does not hold citizenship or permanent residency status in Australia. Chieng joked in 2018 that there was a phobia of cynophobia, however, he afterwards, he said he was 100 % unafraid of dogs.
